First impressions, looks and construction
It's fair to say that I have always been a big fan of watches. Whether it's the retro-cool Casio or the more refined Panerai or Hublot, they all serve a different purpose (other than telling the time!) in defining a certain style or purpose for wear (e.g. casual, dress, formal etc). Obviously, price is a big factor in that "definition" and you can spend from 50p on a watch upwards to a virtually infinite amount. With that in mind, I was very looking forward to receiving and reviewing this Distnction dress watch made by Anthony James to see how it fared for the modest price tag. So here goes.
The watch comes in a well-presented display box, which is simple and effective. Of course, you might buy a Rolex and you will get a better made and more quality box, however for a dress watch I am actually quite impressed by the design and quality of the box in giving a good first impression. The watch itself is a nice colour blue. Distinctive but not over the top. On initial inspection, it is a nice looking, understated and classy looking dress watch.
Testing and Functionality
The look and feel of the watch gives the impression it is well made. Not too light so reassuringly sturdy and nice to hold. The leather strap is a good width, relatively narrow, so serves well for a dress watch. A small detail, but the shape of the metal clasp on the leather strap is a nice V-shape and makes it stand out over a normal rectangle clasp. The strap itself feels robust and comfortable on the wrist.
The shiny stainless steel watch case is clean and makes the watch look sophisticated and I really like the design of the hands which are thin and sharp.
I like the blue face and the design of the hour points. Simple but effective against the blue face. For me, I like my watch to include a date like the Datejust on a Rolex. This is just personal preference and some people might not care, but for me an inclusion of a subtle date would have improved the watch's functionality.
Also, to be pernickety, I think the "Distinction" font on the face could have been better. It's not offensive in any way and doesn’t detract from the generally positive appearance of the watch, but I think I would have chosen a font that is more in keeping with the preceding font of Anthony James. You could argue that if that was the case, it would not be "distinctive". So, I do see the irony, but again just a personal preference in design.
In summary, I think that the Distinction watch is a really good looking watch which would suit a lot of formal occasions as well as general every day wear. Given the price and the classy appearance, you really cannot go wrong with this watch. It is presented well in a simple way and versatile to suit most clothing combinations and, as long as you like the design, it is a great choice.
