Chinese New Year 2018: Celebrating Year of the Dog

16 Feb 2018

The previous Chinese New Year was the Year of the Rooster, which was my year. Gone now are the cock jokes and today, 16 February 2018, Chinese New Year is here and it is the Year of the Dog.

There are a lot of intriguing facts about Chinese New Year so let's kick things off with one interesting fact. Houses are decorated with red banners, red lanterns and red paper cuttings. City streets are lit up by red lanterns and people are dressed in red. Red envelopes containing money are given out to friends and family. Why is red used so much for Chinese New Year? This is because red in Chinese culture is the symbol of happiness, wealth and prosperity, thought to ward off evil spirits and bring good luck.

Aside from the traditions and superstitions with every year that passes, the key for Chinese New Year in our household is spending time with loved ones, usually enjoying some delicious food and talking about the animals of the Chinese zodiac. We also give red envelopes to our children with a nominal amount of cash in it – the key being they can spend it on what they like. It's a nice thing for the kids to have the freedom and autonomy to decide on what they want and to understand the responsibility of spending money and what value it has.

Now, I am not into the whole horoscope thing, but in true Chinese New Year fashion it's a bit of fun to check out your alleged personality traits. So, for all you Dogs out there, this is you:

Strengths
Straightforward, honest, modest, friendly, faithful, values morality and justice, compassionate, intuitive and would rather suffer losses than bother others. Clever, quick-minded, diligent, dedicated, conscientious and ambitious.

Weaknesses
Short-tempered, stubborn, critical of others, theory-oriented but lack of action and judgment in reality, argumentative, suspicious, picky, highly dependent, suffers from imaginary fears and sometimes reclusive and inexplicably silent.

So, Happy Chinese New Year to you and yours.  May your CNY be filled with joy, prosperity and good health.
